Lita swallowed back the bile when it crept up her throat. The last thing she wanted to do was bring up memories of that small town. Her eyes closed as the burn of tears pricked at them.

“Lita?” Sam took her hand in his.

She forced a laugh. “No kissing me. I didn’t really need a knight in shining armor.”

“Oh for fuck’s sake, shut up, Lita,” Sam growled, his lips pressing against hers a minute later.

A spark jumped between them at the touch. The kiss was soft but stirred old emotions to life. Feelings that would destroy her if she let them.

“I love you.” The whispered words slipped out, and she pulled back, her eyes flying open.

Sam’s jaw sat in a solid line, the muscle ticking as if anger rode him hard.

“I didn’t mean to say that.” She pushed away from him, to stand, and moved toward the window. Lita didn’t glance out to see the chaos, she’d seen enough for one day.

“Chalk it up to nerves.” Sam cleared his throat and remained where he sat on the bed. “I need you to talk to me.”

She sighed, her shoulders sagging as if the weight of the world suddenly collapsed onto them. She didn’t look at Sam, couldn’t bring herself to. “He really is attempting to destroy all of humanity – and he has a way to do it. All that’s stopping him is time.”

Sam growled, but Trevors spoke.

“How much time?”

“He took me to Nebraska – to an old farming town – and destroyed it practically before my eyes.” It hurt to breathe as images of the house poured into her mind. “This was a test run, so I assume at least two days before he can manufacture enough of his toxic waste now that it works the way he wants it to.”

“What’s he using? Did you see or hear anything?”

Bile rose up again, drawing a gag from her. “I saw it all. Every single moment. He’s brewed a potion that somehow looks for the genetic marker in human DNA to suffocate them. Some thug with a scar said he deployed it an empty field. It reached the homeowners over a mile away and then a small town I couldn’t see fields anywhere, so it reaches far.”

“God damn it!” Sam’s fist slammed into the wooden headboard and it cracked. The vein on his head pulsed as the fury rolled through him. “I shouldn’t have given you time to clear your head. We should have kept looking.”

I shouldn’t have slept with you, hung unspoken in the room.

Lita flinched, knowing full well he was right. Whether they’d fucked or not, driving to the swamp cost them precious time. He didn’t look at her, his gaze fixated on the wall and he stepped out. Lita stepped forward, but Trevors put his hand up.

“He’s calling the information in. Give him a minute to process that he’s about to be murdered, okay?” The sadness in Trevors’ eyes could have swallowed her whole. “Are you certain Vexx will need more time?”

She nodded.
